Arrays for Visualizing Multiplication

After exploring grouping/multiplication problems through meaningful and relatable contexts (like multiplication story problems), arrays provide a flexible visual to discuss the “math facts.”

I put “math facts” in quotes because Kristine Ho changed the way I approach this idea:

So how do you build math relationships? By seeing and hearing other people’s perspective. By pulling apart the “fact” to play with its inner workings. By building flexibility, so if you forget 7×8, you can use other facts you do know to solve it (like doubling 4×7, adding a group of 7 to 7×7, etc.).

Arrays are time consuming to create, so I did all the work for you. Now you can spend more time letting your students reveal their brilliance and creativity as they create math relationships that make sense to them.

Click below to access the arrays as slides (Google or PowerPoint), Jamboards, images, or PDFs.
